Alumni at a glance!
As an active stakeholder in· the maritime industry, the Alumni proactively seek to foster bi-partisan relationship between the Academia and practitioners in the maritime industry as well as -encouraging intellectual and emotional ties between members and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron and other maritime institutions. Members of the Alumni are presently experts in diverse sectors of the maritime and related industry including Oil & Gas, Shipping, Transportation, Nuclear Power, Engineering, Freight forwarding, Port management, Information Technology, Oil spills, Classification Societies, Navigation, Maritime Law, Company founders and CEO’s, Energy and Utilities in various parts of the world. These individuals are excellent ambassadors of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron.
In 1979, the Federal Government established the Nautical College of Nigeria, Oron. Its mandate was to provide practical skill-based training for shipboard
officers, ratings and shore-based personnel for Nigerian maritime industry. The college had it first set of graduates in 1983. In 1988, through the promulgation of Decree No. 16 of 1988, the college was elevated to its present status as Maritime Academy of Nigeria, with a statutory mandate to train all levels and categories of personnel required for the effective and efficient operation of various facets of the Nigerian maritime industry.
The history of MAN Oron Alumni is dated back 29th October 2001.
In 2009 another group which was unaware about the existing Alumni group met at a workshop on Maritime Human Capacity Building held at Calabar in August 2009 and saw the necessity of Alumni, hence a bigger meeting convened and held on 27th September, 2009 at the Secretariat of National Association of aster Mariners, Lagos.
During this meeting, a 12- man caretaker committee was constituted under the leaders of Capt. Olajide Olugunwa with a mandate to draft a Constitution, Incorporate the Alumni and conduct election into office. The Alumni was officially incorporated dated 19th September, 2013. The first election was conducted on SATURDAY, 7TH JUNE 2014.
